Eye of the Phoenix is a well presented and cute little mod that replaces
the Yuri side completely with a mysterious faction called 'The Phoenix'.
Boggy and his team have done a good job putting the side together, and
doing all the shps for buildings, etc. One thing I would have liked is
some all-new voice packs for the Phoenix side. However, few mods actually
bother with this, I admit. It's also a very minor thing, and not expected.
There aren't many major changes for any of the Allied or Soviet sides,
mostly adding commonly-used units such as the Howitzer or the Light Tank,
and also modifying certain aspects, such as decreasing build times for
certain nations.
One thing I do like is innovation, and The Phoenix get plenty of that.
They have an unusual addition to their tech trees, in that you build Elements
(Wood, Earth, Fire. Gold and Water) to progress even higher up the tech
tree than the Battle Lab. The odd thing about the Elements is the way
you get it to work. They're under the Armoury tab, and you place them
as you would a structure and then reap their effects. A tad awkward for
first-time players. but I suppose it was the ony real way to get a tech
tree advance outside of making another structure for the player to build.
The main problem with the mod is balance. The Phoenix are simply WAY too
strong. They have a range of units that is unparalelled by the other sides,
and yet, the pricing of their units and defensive structures is stupidly
high, meaning that a savvy opponent would win in the early game, but,
with a major income, the Phoenix would win a million times over.
The AI has had some nice touches, with replacement CY building. However,
it's not so bright if you build it all of 2 cells away from the original.
Their attacks are somewhat better, though.
