Defcon is a newly released Generals Total Conversion. The game uses techlevel like gameplay, where each defcon level you reach you are granted new units and structures. The first Defcon you acheive (are given) is Defcon 5, which allows the creation of a Barracks, rifleman, anti-tank soldier, and defense structure. As you go down in Defcon levels (the final being Defcon 1) you are granted more technologies. The Mod feels a lot better than generals in my opinion, tanks are much more powerful now, and infantry are a big more expendable (and cheaper). Aircraft is granted later in the game, and you will rarely use the superweapons which are unlocked in Defcon 1.
The 3 sides featured in Generals are now gone, and arn't dealt with in the game at all. The two new sides are The Ebres and The Aerosian races. They each have their own versions of the same basic buildings, although moddified to each sides needs. Each side has a barracks and a war factory, ect. The Aerosians are more powerful when i comes down to it, but the Ebres have lower prices and quicker builtimes for certain structures. So depending on your strategy you may find it easier to use one faction and get completely demolished by the other.
The AI is a bit unpredictable, one game you will demolish them before even building a airfield, another game you will be engaged in combat for an extended amount of time, and other games you will get wiped out. It seems that the AI's difficulty varies by the map. Certain maps the AI will own at and others it will be an easy feat. But for the most part the AI will put up a good fight.
Defon, unfortunately does not have a campaign for either of the two sides in the game. They do have a story in which they may work out 2 campaigns for later, but for the time being Skirmish and Multiplayer are the key principles of the game. The skirmish mode is quite fun, and I havn't yet played it over the internet, although if you have some friends download the mod you can setup games over GOL.
Overall the mod is indeed a total conversion and doesn't leave any of the 3 original sides for Generals. The graphical makeover is very nicly done. Most structures are more tentlike and defense structures are lined with sandbags. Infantry are more to scale with the world, and vehicles really stand out in the battlefield. The Unique Gameplay of the mod is my favorite part. Played almost in tech levels, you start off with only infantry and work your way up to unlocking superweapons, creating many new strategies and rush tactics. The Mod almost feels like your playing a completely new game and is well deserving of your playing time.
