When we first heard about the first 3D RTS game made by EA Pacific (Hence
Westwood) we were all excited and giddy, and read to put that dent in
our wallet. The question is though, did Generals live up to the hype?
I don't think so..
Let's look at a few things first. In the modding realm, so far it is unmatched.
I am yet to find a game that is Generals' superior to modding but, like
in RA2 and previous C&C titles, things we would have liked (or were informed
and were holding onto) were taken out. I don't know about you , but the
P.O.W. logic, is something I would have liked to have normally. Sure Deezire's
Pro:GEN mod is re-adding it in, but still we were told it would be there
and now it isn't.
Also, what is it with more than one superweapon in-game? I red somewhere
(An ancienct press release actually) that Generals was going to be more
realistic, but with some future fun mixed in. Sure the Paladin's laser
is something we will probably see in the future, and maybe even a particle
cannon, but multiple Particle Cannons? I have always been a staunch supporter
of only 1 superweapon normally able to be built, and more than one is
sort of "n00bish" to me.
A lot of units were made, cancelled, made, cancelled and made again, making
it almost impossible for the community to keep up with what was in the
game. Sure the units may have been impressive, but it is also nice to
know what there will be first...
The AI. Let's face it, with all due respect to Westwood, apart from Tiberian
Sun there hasn't been a decent AI around for a long time. Sure, the tactics
caught me slightly off guard (The worker in the back with the tunnel),
but I still managed to conquer them yet again. While they stood a slight
chance, I merely had to move 1 overlord over there and it was the end
of the story..
There was some good in the game and I won't deny it at all. I like the
whole idea, of 3 "totally unique" sides. Technology -vs- Numbers -vs-
Guerillas. It's the traditional war mode and it's just the way I like
it. The graphics are superb, and even on my old system which only just
makes the bare minimum, Generals runs perfectly...
I'll admit Generals is a great game, and it is fun to play, but sadly
it just didn't live up to all of the hype the community might have expected.
