Possibly one of the many questions we will ask of ourselves and what others
will ask of us. What is it that has us modding something that was good
enough to buy it. Why do we have to mod something that was tested by many
different people and branded as safe to be played. Is it the fun, the
abilities, the chance to create your own work, or is it something different?
As we wait for Command and Conquer Generals, we notice that people listen
and we actually aren't abandoned. Generals has been called mod friendly
and is going to have mod support. That makes us ask another question.
If the game is good enough to them, why should they help others change
what they have already created themselves and is according to them the
best that it can already be?
We look around at the various modifications around today and we analyze
them and we will say something like "Deezire's is a put back in Mod, AR2
is a TC mod, MooMan's Rules is more of an expansion mod". We each classify
each mod as to what it does and how it impacts us. Another question to
ask would be, what makes these mods better than the original game? Now
Modding as much as it may be hated by some companies is also a lifeline.
If something is able to be modified and changed to make it even better,
then as well as the public enjoying the game, it says that the game should
be bought as it can be changed to your liking. Forget getting wiped out
by that Rhino rush, just a few quick minutes and you have the flying tanks
and the instant superweapons.
As more and more people start to modify things, and more and more games
are released that are mod friendly we are confronted with ann issue. Are
we buying this game because we want to, or are we buying the game because
it might be worthless, but you can make it into a masterpiece?
Games are always released with the best of intenions and sometimes things
go wrong, and updates are released yet still the outcry goes unheard.
We modify something in all essence, because we prefer to model it how
we like it. Nothing is wrong with that and most times everybody esle likes
the mod to.
We don't have to modify something, but we either do it to enhance the
game, or just to show how great it really is.
